Fancy French Toast with “Bananas Foster” Topping

I love cooking for my family.  I love knowing exactly what we are eating and knowing that I am filling our bellies with good food.  I hate doing dishes, but that is a story for another time.

Typically I cook nice balanced healthy meals.  Sometimes I completely throw caution to the wind and make something just because it is delicious.  Fancy French Toast certainly falls under the category of delicious.  It is made with good wholesome ingredients so it is incredibly filling!

First up is the French Toast:

For the bread I used a Challah loaf from Zingermans.  Yes it is pricey, but it is local and absurdly delicious.  For a budget friendly option you could certainly make your own or use another bread.  We don’t make this very often, so the Challah is totally worth the splurge.

French Toast Batter: (may need to be doubled or tripled, I make one “batch” at a time because ingredients are expensive, don’t want any waste!)

2 eggs
2/3 cup milk
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla extract

Cook french toast on a greased skillet over medium heat until cooked through.  Coconut oil is an excellent cooking medium, we love the extra coconut flavor!

“Bananas Foster” Topping:

(Confession: I have never eaten bananas foster, but it sounded like an appropriate name)

In a small skillet I combined 2 Tbsp butter and 2Tbsp honey (raw local honey is the only honey as for as I am concerned).  I let them melt down over medium heat for about 10 minutes until nice and bubbly.  Add a sliced banana or two to your sauce and cook over low-medium heat for a few minutes until the bananas are heated through.  Serve over French Toast to your favorite people!

We paired ours with some sliced strawberries and Grahams Organics sausage.

Food Haul 3.7.14

Happy Friday!!

This week started with a very empty fridge and pantry. I reorganized my pantry and I tossed an embarrassing amount of old expired stuff. In better news, I am much better organized now!  I also packed up a box of food to donate so I know I won’t be wasteful.

Our budget was pretty lean for a couple weeks so we tried to only buy what was absolutely necessary. We ate just fine but a little boring. Wednesday was our Door to Door Organics day and it felt like Christmas!

Lots of beautiful color in the boxes!  Local toddler was happy to see his Calder Dairy milk and some Brown Cow yogurt. My husband did our order this week so he got us both brownies (Zingermans for him and a vegan one from Pinwheel Bakery for me).  Also some Tofutti dairy free sour cream and Smoking Goose applewood smoked bacon aka the only bacon ever found in our house.  We spent $60 at Door to Door and my fridge is so much happier!

I also went to Pure Pastures this week but I cannot find my photos!  I bought 2 whole chickens, frozen bell peppers, canned beans, soy sauce, potatoes, sausage, dried cherries and I am certain I am missing a few things. Spent $50.70 and $50 of that was covered by a groupon I had purchased for $30.

Food Haul 11.8.13

How is it November already?! Thanksgiving is coming up so quickly! I love Thanksgiving but I can’t believe how quickly this year is flying by.

This week is just Door to Door Organics. Lots of goodies to share though!

The Challah bread from Zingermans is a thing of beauty. It is pricey, but makes the best French Toast you have ever eaten in your life. We are obsessed with this bacon from Smoking Goose! Just a fair warning, if you eat it you will never EVER be able to eat regular grocery store bacon again. Completely worth it, but don’t say I didn’t warn you! The eggs are from Creswick Farms and the milk in glass bottles is from Calder Dairy. Grabbed some maple Brown Cow yogurt and the always tasty Garden Fresh Gourmet wild mild fresh salsa. I also needed some Tofutti sour cream and cream cheese. I don’t typically like most dairy imposters but those two things are so delicious! Somehow the Zingermans brownie escaped being photographed, but I snuck one of those in the order for local hubby.

In the bitty box this week I got zucchini, avocado, kale, pie pumpkin, potatoes, bananas, apples and lettuce. The warehouse had strawberries out when I picked up my boxes. Local toddler has been begging for strawberries forever but they are so pricey this time of year. I was really jazzed to see them there, thanks Door to Door Organics! He also picked up a green mango that he is completely obsessed with and won’t stop talking about.

Oops, I lied.  I also ran over to Aldi and picked up a container of organic baby spinach and three avocados.  I spent $5 and some change.  I spent $58.99 at Door to Door this week, so my total spending this week was around $64.

Food Haul 8.9.13

Happy Friday! Another week has come and gone, and this one was a little rough in the Real Food House. I got sick and my husband is working super long shifts. Pretty sure local toddler will climb the walls today if we don’t get out of our house!
Because I got sick, I didn’t make it to any markets during the week. Thankfully I have a veggie buying addiction, so the fridge is full.

Last Friday we had the great fortune to be able to harvest from the huge garden where my son attends playgroup. Lots of beautiful chard and kale. We also picked a few green peppers, a summer squash and a cucumber.

Canton Farmers Market was fantastic last week. The author of “Farmers’ Market Day”, Shanda Trent, was selling her book and also reading and signing. We bought one and local toddler is obsessed with it. He talks about the farmers markets all the time, so it’s great to have a book about one of his passions. The illustrations are beautiful! I thought the price point was good too, it’s a very large hardcover for $13. Along with the book, we picked up peaches from Kapnick’s ($5), carrots and potatoes from Hand Sown Farm ($7) and from Prochaska Farm we bought cabbage, a watermelon, onions, bell peppers, corn and a broccoli approximately the size of local toddler. I think I spent $13 there. From Pure Pastures I picked up some chicken and some sausage for $15.

Wednesday was Door to Door Organics day and we got a bitty box. My goal is to eat the beets instead of juicing them. I’d love some beet recipes! The box looks a little sparse because we needed a lot of bananas.

Total from Door to Door must have been around $50. The Internet hates me today so I can’t check. That is also why there are no links in this post, I’m doing it from my phone and they won’t cooperate.

I totally spaced on remembering to take pictures of everything this week.  I do have a few pictures, just not of everything.  There was no Canton Farmers Market this past weekend due to the holiday.  Can’t wait for next week!

On Tuesdays Eastern Market and the Wayne Metro Community action agency is hosting a mobile farmers market in Inkster.  (If you click this link, you can see the full listing of Market stands that Eastern Market is hosting this season, there are a bunch!)  Inkster is somewhat of a food desert so I was glad to hear this.  Local toddler and I decided to go check it out.  It is hosted in front of Starfish Family Services at 3000 Hively, near to Cherry Hill and Middlebelt.  They are open from 2pm-5pm.  It was small but quite a few options were available.

Local toddler selected the yellow grape tomatoes and ate half the container before we even left.  We also got some broccoli and zucchini.  We spent $4.25 at the market.  It was a nice little set-up and I was glad to see it in that area.

Somehow my son has all of the warehouse staff wrapped around his finger and they always make sure he gets an orange (or two!)  There were berries in the freebie bin so he grabbed one of those as well.  I’m a little scatterbrained right now and I totally forgot he had berries.  While I was bringing the boxes in, he decided to make a berry pie.  (The pie toy is the super sorting pie from Learning Resources, it is so cute.)  He also ate an untold number of berries.  Judging from the stains on his shirt they are delightfully juicy.  Being the good blogger I am, I took a picture before cleaning up.

There was also a random trip to Kroger thrown in there this week.  We bought hamburger buns, almond milk, coffee, cereal, tuna, bread, a ton of yogurt, Clif and Larabars, and some other random junk.  Random junk was some potato chips and my favorite junk food ever: Better Made corn pops.  So addictive, I hand the bag to my husband and make him hide it!  We spent about $40 there.

Food costs for the week was $95.25.

I can say with great certainty that when I do math at the end of this post, this will be the highest number ever.

We started off this week with a delivery from Garry at Pure Pastures late Thursday night.  Garry delivered a 1/4 grass-fed local cow.  The hang weight was 166lbs, for a total price of $512.94.  Yes, we spent over $500 on beef.  I feel confident that our beef eating rate, we should be stocked up for a year.  I can do a separate post all about buying a side of beef if there is an interest, and detail the cuts and amounts.

Sunday we went to  the Farmers Market (Canton Farmers Market on Sundays 9-1)

Got some spinach from Hand Sown Farm, some strawberries from Prochaska Farms, and some peach salsa from Pure Pastures.  (Garry gave us the salsa for free along with some eggs when I went in to pay for my side of beef)  We also bought three types of jerky from Captain John’s Smokehouse.

Total from the farmers market was around $23

 

Finally, we have the Door to Door Organics order this week.

Grand total, just about $580.  Whew.  My credit card is a little sad.  My freezer is very happy 🙂

Things are returning back to normal here at the Real Food house.  If you don’t follow me on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) then you might not know that Local Hubby and I both stood up in the amazing wedding of dear friends.  The wedding was at The Henry Ford Museum and the whole thing was amazing.  The food was awesome, they even had a sliders and Better Made chips station late in the evening.

For food this week, we just have Door to Door Organics.

Trying several new (to me) things this week.  The usual Calder Dairy milk, Smoking Goose applewood smoked bacon and a Zingermans brownie.  The new-to-me goodies are Garden Fresh Wild Mild salsa, two flavors of Kind bars, Chocolate coconut Larabar, Ann Arbor Tortilla factory tortilla chips and Great Lakes Potato Chip Company BBQ chips.

This weeks co-op freebie was strawberries.  Local toddler was really excited, but he just couldn’t stay awake on the ride home to have a snack.

A little bit of a quiet week here at the Real Food House.  Local toddler got sick, really for the first time.  It was sad and pitiful and no sleeping was to be had.  We mostly looked like this:

I am happy to report that he is feeling much better and I almost feel human again after a few good nights sleep.  Things got pushed back, and not much cooking got done.  My fridge is still full, so this week was just a bitty box from Door to Door Organics.

From Zingermans  we got a brownie for local hubby and some Challah bread that will be used for the best French toast in the world.    A Mitten Munch berry lemonade bar, lots of yummy fruit, green beans, some greens and a Tiny but Mighty popcorn sample.

Food costs from Door to Door was $32 this week.

I also popped in to my local Westborn Market for the first time this week.  What a cute store!  Full of tons of local goodies!

Picked up some quick items since not a lot of cooking was getting done between a sick kiddo, Mothers Day, and some family events.  Two types of bread, pita, dry beans, avocado, tortilla chips, spinach dip and some hamburger and hotdog buns for the freezer.  I don’t have my receipt handy but I know my total was around $30.

So total food costs for the week was $62.  I am pretty happy with that.

So here’s what we bought at Casa de Real Food this week.

Went to Pure Pastures, bought a bunch of stuff and didn’t take a picture!  We bought Calder Dairy black cherry ice cream for the hubby, beef pasties, eggs, like 4 pounds of boneless chicken breast, and three pounds of grass-fed ground beef.  We spent $56, but $30 of that was covered by the Living Social coupon we bought a month or so ago.

Door to Door Organics this week was fairly normal.Except for the fact that I accidentally purchased too much hummus.  If there is such a thing as too much hummus.

My belly is so happy to have strawberries on a regular basis right now.  Some sugar snap peas are buried in that pile too.  I love spring and summer!

Calder Dairy milk for local toddler, and eggs because I seriously can’t get enough eggs.  I’ve been eating them scrambled with some Garden Fresh salsa and some avocado.  Seriously amazing.  Some Mama Mo hummus and a Zingermans brownie for local hubby.  I’m trying the Larabar for the first time.  My friend Jennifer from Wine to Weightlifting is obsessed with Larabars, and this one was on sale so I’m giving it a try.

Food costs from Door to Door was $58 this week, so added to Pure Pastures we spent $114 for the week.
